Frequently Asked Questions

Several factors go into the timeline. One factor is how many applicants the agency has before your application. However, sometimes the paperwork, required background checks, doctor appointments, and reference letters can hold the home study process up. It is recommended to begin gathering needed items for your social worker once your application is approved.
In short, the process can take as little as six weeks and as long as several months. We pride ourselves in working timely, efficiently, and thoroughly with every client. In return, we expect our clients to work as a team with us and provide needed documentation promptly. We are willing to work at the pace of our clients as this is their adoption journey.

We work with prospective adoptive parents of every relationship status. We also work with those who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community. Whether you are single, dating, engaged, or married for 10 years or one year, please reach out!
-
Nope! We work with families of all different religions or those who are secular.

The social worker’s biggest priority when completing a home visit is: Is the home safe? The social worker will also suggest improvements to specific areas ( ex., maybe a baby gate by the stairs). The social worker will want to see and know where you plan to set up your potential child’s bedroom. We do not expect you to have baby gates up or cabinet locks yet, but when the post-placement visit occurs, we will want to see these improvements (depending on the age of the child).
-
Any non-family member. Think of maybe a close friend, or a co-worker who knows you well, or a neighbor you communicate with often. We recommend it is someone who knows you and your significant other (if applicable) well.
-
The charges and circumstances will need to be discussed with your social worker. Everyone is considered on a case-by-case basis as every situation is unique. If you have previously been arrested or criminally charged, discuss this with your social worker.
-
There is no requirement. Each family’s financial situation is different. Your social worker is mostly looking for financial “stability” which is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
-
As a courtesy, we will charge you as a “home study update” as long as you provide your previous home study.
Please note, this does not apply to a situation where a family has had a home study completed and adopted a child and are receiving a new home study to adopt another child. This would require additional assessment and a full home study would need to be completed.
-
We would have to complete a new home study for the state of South Carolina. This would require completing an entire new home study. As a courtesy, we would charge the family as a home study update given that the family could provide us with their previously completed home study.
-
You will typically have two in person visits with you adoption worker. One visit will take place in your home and the other visit will take place in the office. If you are located far from Conway and do not want to/are unable to travel, please let us know and we can meet half way or complete two visits in the home.
-
Each report assesses one home visit. Typically, two post-placement reports/visits are needed to finalize an adoption. The number of reports needed will be dependent on your agency and/or the court.
